Le Samouraï is everything I expected, and much more. I often see the word "cool" around this film, and yes, it's the fucking epitome of cool. It's a truly minimalistic film, with little-to-no backstory, exposition, dialogue, etc., and a film where most of the story is conveyed through visuals. Melville's style is so elegant and precise. It contains some brilliant camerawork with many

Then Melville told him that he wanted to call it Le Samourai, and Delon stopped dead in his tracks – they were in Delon’s house, and he stood up, gestured to Melville to follow him, and took him into his bedroom. A samourai sword hung over Delon’s bed. According to Melville, Delon said Yes to the film immediately then.

A quick online search after watching Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Samourai confirmed my suspicion: The plot is very rarely understood by English-language critics. Even Roger Ebert's Great Movie Review and Criterion's essay by David Thomson appear to have entirely missed the point. I also interpret the ending being about control but in the opposite direction. The entire power struggle seems to play out in the eyes of the bartender. He tells his girlfriend that he’ll fix everything. At this point, Jef had made the decision to commit seppuku via police.

The Last Samurai grossed a total of $456 million at the box office and was well-received upon its release, receiving praise for the acting, writing, directing, score, visuals, costumes, but criticized in Japan for a romanticized "storybook" portrayal of the samurai, who are regarded as more corrupt. However, Le Samouraï’s emphasis on the (socially, culturally, geographically and temporally) anachronistic figure of the samurai in the modern day metropolis is not motivated by a desire to mock an outdated genre; just the opposite: it is an homage to the elegance and tragic beauty of the lonesome warrior type in all its incarnations (gangster, samurai, noir hero).
